What is a radiant barrier?
A Radiant Barrier is a highly reflective material, most commonly found as a reflective foil, that helps to reduce heat gain through radiant heat. Radiant Barriers do not prevent or reduce heat conduction so should be installed along with thermal insulation in most cases.
Some studies have shown that Radiant Barriers can lower cooling costs between 5%-10% when used in a warm, sunny climate.
When the sun heats a roof, it's primarily the sun's radiant energy that makes the roof hot. A large portion of this heat travels by conduction through the roofing materials to the attic side of the roof. The hot roof material then radiates its gained heat energy to the cooler attic surfaces, including the air ducts and the attic floor. A Radiant Barrier reduces the radiant heat transfer from the underside of the roof to the other surfaces in the attic.
Types of radiant barriers
- Reflective Foil (Most Common) Typically about a .03 Emittance value. Which means it reflects 97% of any incoming radiant heat.
- Reflective Metal Roof Shingles
- Reflective Laminated Roof Sheathing
- Reflective Paints. Sprayed on the underside of the roof decking. All Joists must be painted too. The best one we have found thus far has an Emitance value of .19, meaning it blocks up to 81% of any incoming radiant heat.
FOUNDATION PROBLEMS. The soil surrounding your home constantly expands and contracts. Over expansion or contraction of the soil may lead to slab failure and costly, time consuming repairs. A properly designed and installed gutter system will help to keep the soil surrounding your home at a more consistent level by directing the roof run-off away from your home.Is water pooling at the foundation of your home? Is your brick stained? Mulch floating away with each storm?
DAMAGE TO YOUR HOME'S EXTERIOR. All masonry, siding and exterior facades are susceptible to staining, rotting and mildew. Protect your home with seamless gutters that direct the roof run-off away from your home and protects the beauty of your home's exterior.
DAMAGE TO LANDSCAPING.Your roof's run-off may cause damage to your shrubs, bushes, plants, flowers, mulch and soil. Properly installed gutters will help protect your home's landscaping. Landscaping located directly beneath your roof's natural run-off line may suffer damage in a heavy thunderstorm. Broken branches, over saturation, harmful fungi, and increased ant, roach and termite activity are a direct result of standing water.
